Jane Dickson’s Prater sold for $13,750 at Swann Auction Galleries Contemporary Art auction on Nov. 26, 2024 in New York City. Dickson, who moved to New York City in the 1970s, is known for her nocturnal iconic images, including nostalgic views of the city’s seedy past inspired by her own surroundings while living in Times Square.
From Times Square to Las Vegas, her paintings explore carnivals, peep shows and everything in between. In addition to her unconventional subject matter inspired by her version of Americana, she’s known for incorporating unusual materials such as AstroTurf, vinyl and sandpaper. Dickson’s work is quite literally ingrained in New York City. Her work is featured in permanent collections in venues such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. You can also find Dickson’s mosaic of New Year’s Eve revelers in the Times Square subway station.
Next year, anyone passing through New York City’s John F. Kennedy (JFK) airport can be privy to Dickson’s art as well. She was commissioned to erect a 14-foot bronze medallion in the arrivals plaza of the soon-to-be-open Terminal 6. Joining the ranks of the newly renovated Newark and LaGuardia airports, Dickson’s sculpture at JFK, alongside other commissioned artworks, will “provide a fitting welcome to a city that’s considered the art capital of the world,” according to Port Authority executive director Rick Cotton.
